Bring the Outdoors In With Natural Interior Design
Across every aesthetic, home décor style, and color palette, it’s becoming increasingly clear that sustainable materials are here to stay. "Textiles like organic cotton, wool, and recycled fabrics are more popular for upholstery, curtains, and bedding due to their low environmental footprint and are often sourced from ethical suppliers," says Glaister. Living room wallpapers with motifs that bring that spirit of nature are calming and nurturing and can offer a sense of escapism, they are brilliant for living rooms where they can create a connection to the garden and a feeling of openness.
Consider a soothing nature-inspired palette
Even something as small as a little plant on your table in schools, houses, offices, hospitals, etc. is shown to have a significant amount of impact on human health. Perhaps the most important wisdom is to trust your vision, your taste, and your timeline. Add to it as necessary, or when you’re motivated or inspired.” As the only person who lives in your home, with the exception of family or roommates, focus on what brings you joy, rather than the opinions of others. “Whenever you get a home, everyone becomes an interior designer and has a million suggestions, but you have to live there, no one else lives there,” Bascom says, so take the time and energy to find the items to speak to you. Materials like rattan, jute, raffia and bamboo are incredibly hard-wearing and versatile in design – used across lighting, furniture, dining and decorative accessories by many interior designers.

"Being able to see outside, have sunshine streaming in, and have a feeling of a deeper connection to the out-of-doors can’t be emphasized enough." ‘Overall, a natural wool pile is the best choice for strength and durability,’ says Simon Laurenceau of Pierre Frey. The result is a juxtaposition of materials that respect the identity of the building. Wood is everywhere and oxymoronically blends with noble metals to form a clean, graphic contrast. The traditional architecture of the chalet is retained in the structure and yet eagerly responds to a more modern design. The heart of the Organic Modern trend is the careful balance between sleek, crisp modern lines with raw earthy elements. The aim is to create spaces such as neutral living room ideas that are warm, neutral, and sophisticated whilst maintaining functionality. The final look ultimately harmonizes the outside world with a modern lifestyle.

To emulate the Organic Modern trend, start with a foundation of clean modern lines and organic surfaces such as in this project by Humbert & Poyet pair, Christophe Poyet and Emil Humbert. ‘Organic materials were transformed into contemporary yet timeless elements.
In this guide from AD, learn everything you need to know about a minimalist interior design style, including its history, elements, and how to bring it into your home. Generally when discussing minimalist homes, people imagine clutter-free rooms with white walls and a lack of any unnecessary furnishing or decor. The look is often seen as a close cousin to Scandinavian or Japanese interiors, where both cultures have long embraced a less-is-more ideology. Spaces that fall within a minimalist design aesthetic are typically defined by clean lines, limited ornamentation, a neutral color scheme, and natural materials. And although this may be an accurate way to describe our contemporary understanding of minimalist house design, there is much more to it than just this. A design concept marked by bridging the gaps between people and the nature surrounding their homes, biophilic design is quickly gaining momentum in the world of home renovation and interior design.
The other living room-style area was designed as a sunroom with a pair of boxy 1970s Cornaro armchairs by modernist Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, as well as parquet flooring with Rosa Corallo stone inlay. In front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, a sofa group in pale colours is combined with a matching rug in calm grey and white hues, while a seagreen glass coffee table picks up the light from the windows. Simple wooden furniture sits both inside the living room and on the connected terrace, while woven blankets and a furry throw adding a cosy touch. The open fire means the owners can enjoy the view of the surrounding forest in comfort even in the depths of winter. For a project on an island off the coast of New England, Terri Ricci interiors surrounded a custom dining table with vintage Axel Einar Hjorth chairs. When it comes to a DIY minimalist home design, perhaps one of the most important things you can do is declutter, and this is especially true in small spaces.
In the living room of one of the flats, architecture studio OHLAB used geometric-shaped rattan furniture and a rug to bring a natural colour palette into the all-white room. In the ocean-facing living room, the studio combined a brick floor and wooden wall with modernist furniture, including the slender graphic Valerie Objects Hanging Lamp by design studio Muller Van Severen. Powdery white sand, warmed by underfloor heating, spills into the living spaces of this hotel in Comporta, creating a seamless connection to the beach beyond. Rustic interiors often feature furniture made from organic materials, such as wood and stone, and finishes that have been left natural and unadorned. To do so it created a peaceful modern organic design, as seen in the bedroom, above, and living room (top image.) Brown, tan and cream colours were used in the whole flat, with a material palette of wood and copper. In the eating area, large rustic vases filled with dried branches decorate the windowsills, and a rough-hewn wood vessel sits on the floor.
Having plants like golden pothos or a bamboo palm increase concentration level and helps people focus better. To make a statement and bring a dining scheme to life, opt for a large rattan or bamboo pendant shade. They work particularly well when styled in pairs down the center of a dining table or kitchen island, giving a modern yet artisanal touch and elevating any interior, whether traditional or contemporary.

If sustainably minded design was once considered a fad, it’s become clear in recent years that it is only a matter of time before it’s the industry standard. Interior designers and builders continue to find new ways to innovate at every level of design to maximize efficiency, reduce waste, and protect the environment. We asked expert interior designers to shed some light on emerging sustainable home design and renovation trends—it’s safe to say these techniques are as chic as they are environmentally friendly. If you're lacking inspiration picking an interior style for your living room, the natural living room look is a beautiful option that can really lift this part of the home. Bringing warmth and calming energy to a communal space that can often be lively and busy, embracing the great outdoors in your interiors is a clever and easy way to create a serene space. "A warm colour palette was deployed to unify the spaces by way of gentle oak floors, cream-hued walls that contrasted with dark stone, and stained-wood inset bookshelves," said designer Selma Akkari.
You can also add some softness to bedrooms and sitting areas with cotton area rugs and throw pillows. The kitchen at Amber Place exemplifies the project’s harmonious design approach. Warm wood cabinetry and a crisp white countertop create a serene and inviting atmosphere, while the modern pendant lighting and sleek appliances inject a touch of contemporary flair.
One of the easiest ways to add more natural elements into your homes is houseplants. Also, researching the intensity of lights required by plants and placing them that way is important. Having houseplants adds freshness to the space and uplifts the environment. Having natural elements in your house brings a sense of relaxation and adds character to the space. Being near nature or even being a spectator of nature reduces levels of stress, fear, anxiety, or any other negative feelings and increases pleasant feelings.
So, set your sights on simplicity and serenity with a natural interior design style. Savor the soothing sensation of organic materials and the calming canvas of earthy colors. Moreover, this isn’t just about aesthetics; research suggests a connection between natural elements in our environment and our mental well-being. So, by choosing a natural interior design style, you’re creating a stunning space that promotes relaxation and peace. The Amber Place residence, designed by the talented team at Centerfield Studio, is a remarkable example of how modern design and natural elements can be effortlessly blended to create a harmonious and visually stunning living environment. Centerfield Studio‘s recent remodel of the 3,600 SF Amber Place in Portland, Oregon, US, seamlessly blends the owner’s desire for a “Zen and Pop” aesthetic.
The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks. It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials. A television adaptation was produced by ATV for the ITV network in 1966 for the horror anthology series Mystery and Imagination. In the Roger Corman film from 1960, released in the United States as House of Usher, Vincent Price starred as Roderick Usher, Myrna Fahey as Madeline and Mark Damon as Philip Winthrop, Madeline's fiancé.
Breaking Down the Brutal Ending of The Fall of the House of Usher
Roderick Usher’s children are getting what they deserve, not merely because they are the fruit of a very poisoned tree but because they have made horrific decisions to stay in the shelter of wealth and privilege. It turns out that almost every branch of the Usher family tree has been cut by violent horror. ” “No, not before,” he replies in one of the show’s many glimpses of Flanagan’s viciously dark sense of humor.

The story centers on Usher family patriarch and Fortunato CEO Roderick (Bruce Greenwood), who, as the show begins, calls up his longtime rival, assistant U.S. attorney C. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly), to come hear his confession following the deaths of all six of his adult children (by five different mothers)—Frederick (Henry Thomas), Tamerlane (Samantha Sloyan), Victorine (T'Nia Miller), Napoleon (Rahul Kohli), Camille (Kate Siegel), and Prospero (Sauriyan Sapkota)—in the span of a week. Might we then interpret Roderick as a symbol of the conscious mind – struggling to conceal some dark ‘secret’ and make himself presentable to his friend, the narrator – and Madeline as a symbol of the unconscious? Note how Madeline is barely seen for much of the story, and the second time she appears she is literally buried (repressed?) within the vault. During one sleepless night, the narrator reads aloud to Usher as eerie sounds are heard throughout the mansion. He witnesses Madeline's reemergence and the subsequent, simultaneous death of the twins.

Every Edgar Allan Poe Reference in The Fall of the House of Usher.
Having deposited our mournful burden upon tressels within this region of horror, we partially turned aside the yet unscrewed lid of the coffin, and looked upon the face of the tenant. A striking similitude between the brother and sister now first arrested my attention; and Usher, divining, perhaps, my thoughts, murmured out some few words from which I learned that the deceased and himself had been twins, and that sympathies of a scarcely intelligible nature had always existed between them. Our glances, however, rested not long upon the dead — for we could not regard her unawed. The disease which had thus entombed the lady in the maturity of youth, had left, as usual in all maladies of a strictly cataleptical character, the mockery of a faint blush upon the bosom and the face, and that suspiciously lingering smile upon the lip which is so terrible in death. We replaced and screwed down the lid, and, having secured the door of iron, made our way, with toil, into the scarcely less gloomy apartments of the upper portion of the house.
The silken hair, too, had been suffered to grow all unheeded, and as, in its wild gossamer texture, it floated rather than fell about the face, I could not, even with effort, connect its Arabesque expression with any idea of simple humanity. The antique volume which I had taken up was the “Mad Trist” of Sir Launcelot Canning; but I had called it a favourite of Usher's more in sad jest than in earnest; for, in truth, there is little in its uncouth and unimaginative prolixity which could have had interest for the lofty and spiritual ideality of my friend. Could I have judged, indeed, by the wild over-strained air of vivacity with which he hearkened, or apparently hearkened, to the words of the tale, I might well have congratulated myself upon the success of my design.
#2 His Georgia Mansion
Feeble gleams of encrimsoned light made their way through the trellised panes, and served to render sufficiently distinct the more prominent objects around the eye, however, struggled in vain to reach the remoter angles of the chamber, or the recesses of the vaulted and fretted ceiling. House of Usher is a 1960 American International Pictures horror movie. It stars Vincent Price, Myrna Fahey, Mark Damon, and Harry Ellerbee. It is based on the short story The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe.
I struggled to reason off the nervousness which had dominion over me. I endeavored to believe that much, if not all of what I felt, was due to the bewildering influence of the gloomy furniture of the room — of the dark and tattered draperies, which, tortured into motion by the breath of a rising tempest, swayed fitfully to and fro upon the walls, and rustled uneasily about the decorations of the bed. An irrepressible tremor gradually pervaded my frame; and, at length, there sat upon my very heart an incubus of utterly causeless alarm. Shaking this off with a gasp and a struggle, I uplifted myself upon the pillows, and, peering earnestly within the intense darkness of the chamber, harkened — I know not why, except that an instinctive spirit prompted me — to certain low and indefinite sounds which came, through the pauses of the storm, at long intervals, I knew not whence. Overpowered by an intense sentiment of horror, unaccountable yet unendurable, I threw on my clothes with haste (for I felt that I should sleep no more during the night), and endeavored to arouse myself from the pitiable condition into which I had fallen, by pacing rapidly to and fro through the apartment.
What is The Fall of the House of Usher about?
The pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue—but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. There were times, indeed, when I thought his unceasingly agitated mind was labouring with some oppressive secret, to divulge which he struggled for the necessary courage. Loosely based on various works by 19th-century author Edgar Allan Poe (most prominently the eponymous 1840 short story), the series adapts otherwise unrelated stories and characters by Poe into a single nonlinear narrative set from 1953 to 2023. It recounts both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company and his sister Madeline Usher, the firm's genius COO, and the events leading to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children. It stars an ensemble cast led by Carla Gugino as a mysterious woman plaguing the Ushers, Bruce Greenwood as an elderly Roderick and Mary McDonnell as an elderly Madeline.
The plot of the romance (a fictional title invented by Poe himself, called ‘Mad Trist’) concerns a hero named Ethelred who enters the house of a hermit and slays a dragon. Roderick Usher is a gifted poet and artist, whose talents the narrator praises before sharing a poem Usher wrote, titled ‘The Haunted Palace’. The ballad concerns a royal palace which was once filled with joy and song, until ‘evil things’ attacked the king’s palace and made it a desolate shadow of what it once was.
Certain accessory points of the design served well to convey the idea that this excavation lay at an exceeding depth below the surface of the earth. No outlet was observed in any portion of its vast extent, and no torch, or other artificial source of light was discernible; yet a flood of intense rays rolled throughout, and bathed the whole in a ghastly and inappropriate splendor. Shaking off from my spirit what must have been a dream, I scanned more narrowly the real aspect of the building. Minute fungi overspread the whole exterior, hanging in a fine tangled web-work from the eaves. No portion of the masonry had fallen; and there appeared to be a wild inconsistency between its still perfect adaptation of parts, and the crumbling condition of the individual stones.
It was thus that he spoke of the object of my visit, of his earnest desire to see me, and of the solace he expected me to afford him. He entered, at some length, into what he conceived to be the nature of his malady. It was, he said, a constitutional and a family evil, and one for which he despaired to find a remedy — a mere nervous affection, he immediately added, which would undoubtedly soon pass off. Some of these, as he detailed them, interested and bewildered me; although, perhaps, the terms, and the general manner of the narration had their weight.
Many critics have interpreted the story as, in part, an autobiographical portrait of Poe himself, although we should be wary, perhaps, of speculating too much about any parallels. In a shocking development, Madeline breaks out of her coffin and enters the room, and Roderick confesses that he buried her alive. Madeline attacks her brother and kills both him and herself in the struggle, and the narrator flees the house. It is a stormy night, and as he leaves he sees the house fall down, collapsing into the lake which reflects the house’s image. Several days later, Roderick tells the narrator that Madeline has died, and they lay her to rest in a vault.
When one steps back and looks at the whole narrative of the season of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” it sags in places. Most of the flashbacks to a young Usher and Dupin are thin, especially compared to the wicked fun on display in the fates of the Usher children. It feels like padding to get episodes to a full hour when Flanagan and company could have leaned even more into the episodic structure that highlights a single Poe per chapter.
The disease of the lady Madeline had long baffled the skill of her physicians. A settled apathy, a gradual wasting away of the person, and frequent although transient affections of a partially cataleptical character, were the unusual diagnosis. He admitted, however, although with hesitation, that much of the peculiar gloom which thus afflicted him could be traced to a more natural and far more palpable origin — to the severe and long-continued illness — indeed to the evidently approaching dissolution — of a tenderly beloved sister — his sole companion for long years — his last and only relative on earth. “Her decease,” he said, with a bitterness which I can never forget, “would leave him (him the hopeless and the frail) the last of the ancient race of the Ushers.” While he spoke, the lady Madeline (for so was she called) passed slowly through a remote portion of the apartment, and, without having noticed my presence, disappeared. I regarded her with an utter astonishment not unmingled with dread — and yet I found it impossible to account for such feelings. A sensation of stupor oppressed me, as my eyes followed her retreating steps.
And now, some days of bitter grief having elapsed, an observable change came over the features of the mental disorder of my friend. He roamed from chamber to chamber with hurried, unequal, and objectless step. The pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue — but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. The once occasional huskiness of his tone was heard no more; and a tremulous quaver, as if of extreme terror, habitually characterized his utterance.
From the paintings over which his elaborate fancy brooded, and which grew, touch by touch, into vaguenesses at which I shuddered the more thrillingly, because I shuddered knowing not why;—from these paintings (vivid as their images now are before me) I would in vain endeavour to educe more than a small portion which should lie within the compass of merely written words. For me at least—in the circumstances then surrounding me—there arose out of the pure abstractions which the hypochondriac contrived to throw upon his canvas, an intensity of intolerable awe, no shadow of which felt I ever yet in the contemplation of the certainly glowing yet too concrete reveries of Fuseli. The property also offers spectacular living space outside, added by the outdoor kitchen and dining. The heated swimming pool includes a spa perfect for relaxing while there’s a dance studio as well, perfect for the R&B artist like Usher. Usher has been reimagined as the head of a massive pharmaceutical company he runs with his twin sister, Madeline (Mary McDonnell). Every episode includes flashbacks to a young Roderick (Zach Gilford), Madeline (Willa Fitzgerald), and Annabel Lee (Katie Parker), Roderick’s first wife.
House of Usher
The story opens on a “dull, dark, and soundless day” in a “singularly dreary tract of country.” As the narrator notes, it is autumn, the time of year when life begins to give way to old age and death. A mere glimpse of the Usher mansion inspires in the narrator “an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart.” Upon entering the house, the reader as the narrator navigates through a series of dark passages lined with carvings, tapestries, and armorial trophies. Poe draws heavily on Gothic conventions, using omens and portents, heavy storms, hidden passageways, and shadows to set the reader on edge. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is an 1839 short story by Edgar Allan Poe ( ), a pioneer of the short story and a writer who arguably unleashed the full psychological potential of the Gothic horror genre.

I regarded her with an utter astonishment not unmingled with dread—and yet I found it impossible to account for such feelings. When a door, at length, closed upon her, my glance sought instinctively and eagerly the countenance of the brother—but he had buried his face in his hands, and I could only perceive that a far more than ordinary wanness had overspread the emaciated fingers through which trickled many passionate tears.

Without giving too much away — because trust us, you’ll want to be surprised — the horror drama follows Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood), the CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company, who must face his shady past when each of his children begin to die in mysterious and brutal fashion.

Annabel Lee reveals that she’d tell people “he’s rich” when they’d ask how he stole her kids away. But now she only sees poverty in Roderick, as he starved their children of love. After she turns her back on him, we learn that she died by suicide. That [denial] sort of seeps in more and more and more,” Miller said.
The Tell-Tale Heart
Roderick sings "The Haunted Palace", then tells the narrator that he believes the house he lives in to be alive, and that this sentience arises from the arrangement of the masonry and vegetation surrounding it. Further, Roderick believes that his fate is connected to the family mansion. But evil things, in robes of sorrow,Assailed the monarch’s high estate;(Ah, let us mourn, for never morrowShall dawn upon him, desolate!)And, round about his home, the gloryThat blushed and bloomedIs but a dim-remembered storyOf the old time entombed. And all with pearl and ruby glowingWas the fair palace door,Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing,And sparkling evermore,A troop of Echoes whose sweet dutyWas but to sing,In voices of surpassing beauty,The wit and wisdom of their king. Who entereth herein, a conqueror hath bin; Who slayeth the dragon, the shield he shall win.
Roderick Usher
Shaking this off with a gasp and a struggle, I uplifted myself upon the pillows, and, peering earnestly within the intense darkness of the chamber, hearkened—I know not why, except that an instinctive spirit prompted me—to certain low and indefinite sounds which came, through the pauses of the storm, at long intervals, I knew not whence. Overpowered by an intense sentiment of horror, unaccountable yet unendurable, I threw on my clothes with haste (for I felt that I should sleep no more during the night), and endeavoured to arouse myself from the pitiable condition into which I had fallen, by pacing rapidly to and fro through the apartment. Our glances, however, rested not long upon the dead—for we could not regard her unawed. It was, he said, a constitutional and a family evil, and one for which he despaired to find a remedy—a mere nervous affection, he immediately added, which would undoubtedly soon pass off.

The music maestro Usher just sold his longtime property in Alpharetta, Georgia for $1.5 million.
Philip becomes increasingly desperate to take Madeline away; desperate to get away from her brother, she agrees to leave with him. Roderick and Madeline sold their souls the night they killed Fortunato CEO Rufus Griswold (Michael Trucco) — the same night they met Verna, on New Year’s Eve 1979. Using Griswold as a fall guy to begin Roderick’s takeover, the twins drugged him on the night of the company holiday party. When Griswold woke, he found that they’re sealing him behind a brick wall in the basement of the new Fortunato building he’s constructing. His cries for help were useless, because the holidays meant no one would be back in the building for days.
The children’s room has large space added by the stylish bed while the bathroom is complete with a bathtub, shower room and is near the sauna, powder room, closet, and yoga studio. “The Fall of the House of Usher” updates the work of Edgar Allan Poe for the era of Big Pharma, turning his most famous tales into a sprawling story of the decline of a wealthy American family. It’s “Succession” meets The Tell-Tale Heart, a story of vengeance, power, betrayal, and bloody parts. The antique volume which I had taken up was the “Mad Trist” of Sir Launcelot Canning; but I had called it a favorite of Usher’s more in sad jest than in earnest; for, in truth, there is little in its uncouth and unimaginative prolixity which could have had interest for the lofty and spiritual ideality of my friend. It was, however, the only book immediately at hand; and I indulged a vague hope that the excitement which now agitated the hypochondriac, might find relief (for the history of mental disorder is full of similar anomalies) even in the extremeness of the folly which I should read.
A letter, however, had lately reached me in a distant part of the country—a letter from him—which, in its wildly importunate nature, had admitted of no other than a personal reply. The writer spoke of acute bodily illness—of a mental disorder which oppressed him—and of an earnest desire to see me, as his best, and indeed his only personal friend, with a view of attempting, by the cheerfulness of my society, some alleviation of his malady. It was the manner in which all this, and much more, was said—it was the apparent heart that went with his request—which allowed me no room for hesitation; and I accordingly obeyed forthwith what I still considered a very singular summons. With this foreboding introduction, we enter the interior through a Gothic portal with the narrator. With him we encounter Roderick Usher, who has changed drastically since last the narrator saw him.
In the manner of my friend I was at once struck with an incoherence — an inconsistency; and I soon found this to arise from a series of feeble and futile struggles to overcome an habitual trepidancy — an excessive nervous agitation. For something of this nature I had indeed been prepared, no less by his letter, than by reminiscences of certain boyish traits, and by conclusions deduced from his peculiar physical conformation and temperament. As if in the superhuman energy of his utterance there had been found the potency of a spell—the huge antique panels to which the speaker pointed, threw slowly back, upon the instant, ponderous and ebony jaws. It was the work of the rushing gust—but then without those doors there did stand the lofty and enshrouded figure of the lady Madeline of Usher.
He suffered much from a morbid acuteness of the senses; the most insipid food was alone endurable; he could wear only garments of certain texture; the odours of all flowers were oppressive; his eyes were tortured by even a faint light; and there were but peculiar sounds, and these from stringed instruments, which did not inspire him with horror. Upon my entrance, Usher arose from a sofa on which he had been lying at full length, and greeted me with a vivacious warmth which had much in it, I at first thought, of an overdone cordiality—of the constrained effort of the ennuyé man of the world. The now ghastly pallor of the skin, and the now miraculous lustre of the eve, above all things startled and even awed me.
Surely, man had never before so terribly altered, in so brief a period, as had Roderick Usher! It was with difficulty that I could bring myself to admit the identity of the wan being before me with the companion of my early boyhood. And now in the mere exaggeration of the prevailing character of these features, and of the expression they were wont to convey, lay so much of change that I doubted to whom I spoke. The now ghastly pallor of the skin, and the now miraculous lustre of the eye, above all things startled and even awed me.
His countenance was, as usual, cadaverously wan—but, moreover, there was a species of mad hilarity in his eyes—an evidently restrained hysteria in his whole demeanour. His air appalled me—but anything was preferable to the solitude which I had so long endured, and I even welcomed his presence as a relief. The vault in which we placed it (and which had been so long unopened that our torches, half smothered in its oppressive atmosphere, gave us little opportunity for investigation) was small, damp, and entirely without means of admission for light; lying, at great depth, immediately beneath that portion of the building in which was my own sleeping apartment.
Even though the styles were separated by about a century, they still share several commonalities, including a conspicuous lack of exterior details. The modest size of Cape Cod homes often translated into modest use of details. Houses of this style are often sited to maximize available sunlight, with the biggest windows facing south. This positioning helps minimize heating costs while bringing ample natural light into rooms.
Cons of Cape Cod-style architecture
If you want to enrich your Cape Cod house exterior ideas and transform your home into a restrained and classic one, you could also consider roses for the exterior and ivy as well. No doubt, you love every aspect of the design of a typical Cape Cod home, and you want to bring in these Cape Cod house design ideas into your own home. The good news is that you can transform your home into an ideal Cape Cod home without breaking the bank and it doesn’t have to be from scratch. Early Cape Cod houses were built with wood soaked in pine or oak and covered with clapboard or shingles for a textural shell to withstand weather conditions of all kinds.
Roof Styles in Cape Cod Houses
Upstairs, the master bath co-opted space from a large closet for a double vanity and an enlarged shower, and gained two more windows. Built in 1974, the house held 2,800 square feet, with three bedrooms and two and a half baths, and was in surprisingly good shape. With a full-width front porch, a new two-story garage, and a fresh color palette, architect Jeff Troyer gives a 1953 Cape the upgraded look and function it deserves. Julia is a part of the content marketing team and enjoys writing about real estate and design trends. A centered, space-saving pocket door now connects the kitchen and dining room. Atlanta couple Wendy and Cleve Meredith drew on their New England roots to reinvent a 1930s Cape Cod house that already contained a lot of character.
Design + Decorate
"I wish I could say they're family members, but they're actually not," Wendy admits. The upper walls are painted the same gray color as the kitchen island to help connect the adjacent rooms, while creamy horizontal wood planks are found below the chair rail. Simple refinishing brought the original hardwood floors to their now beautiful state. Cape Cod styled homes aren’t new in terms of architectural hallmarks, they have been around for centuries and now have been updated and redefined to reflect a more sophisticated feel that will never go out of style.

Historical Capes were clad in long-lasting cedar shingles, sometimes with clapboards on the facade. The earliest Cape Cod-style houses were built by Puritans in New England; the snug, one-story homes were designed to withstand the harsh environment. The windows on a Cape Cod play a critical role in creating the charm and curb appeal of this home style. Originally, Cape Cod homes were often built to maximize available sunlight, with the largest and tallest windows facing south. This positioning helped minimize heating costs while taking advantage of natural light. You’ll typically see double-hung windows with shutters on the main floor, and dormers on the second to increase light and air circulation.
Vintage Style Island
Highly identical to the American Vision of a home, these houses master efficiency and aesthetics. This style of home has continuously succeeded in charming us with its frivolous elements and an old-movie look. Meanwhile, its rich history enriches the design of this style and commemorates its century-long existence. Cape Cod-style houses can come in many shapes and sizes—the charming, modest dimensions of a half Cape make ideal starter homes for many people, while others may aspire to the grander proportions of a full Cape. A half Cape has its front door on one side of the facade, with two windows on the other side (this is also known as a “single Cape”). A full Cape, on the other hand, has a door in the center with two windows flanking it on each side.

The distinctive character of these homes marks as an important style of design in the history that continues to lead for the generations to come. Opening into the living room is an eye-catchy fireplace with a large chimney design located as a focal point. These warm and cozy living rooms open out to a pilastered porch overlooking the lush English garden. “There can be a very thick layer of aesthetics laid over the function,” Seifter says. “Each generation tried to be true to the original form, but these were more modern houses and they had to accommodate functions that were not in the original versions. With modest square footage that typically ranges from 1,200 to 1,800 square feet, the Cape Cod is smaller than most homes built today, which average around 2,300 square feet.
To keep the vibe friendly, Wendy chose a round table and antique chairs covered in simple linen and checked fabrics. A dainty scalloped edge on the chairs and table topper adds a decorative touch. A distinctive 13-arm meeting-house chandelier has been in her family for years. A small but efficient island holds refrigerator drawers and a bookcase for cookbooks. Painted deep gray to contrast with the lighter color of the cabinets and topped with marble, it feels vintage and perhaps even original to the house. It was, in fact, the puritan carpenters who initially brought the Cape Cod home style to America.

Wealthier homeowners started adding wings, dormers, and decorative elements to their houses, giving rise to the “expanded Cape” style. And for even more inspiration, our Living room ideas feature has even more ways to update your social space. Installing wide windows is the simplest method to achieve natural light, but you can utilize all available means to ensure a well-lit room in addition to the use of a white or light-colored color scheme.
Elegant natural materials and nautical touches are used lavishly throughout these rooms. The soft homage to traditional style in the furnishings and decor makes them feel especially warm and welcoming. Revival houses, neat and nostalgic behind their white picket fences, are most often symmetrical full Capes, often clapboarded and shuttered, painted white, with more formal and flexible floor plans." Why not try some blacks in doors, window frames, and trims to give your home a modern touch? All Cape Cod homes have shutters to protect the interiors, so you could let your creative juices flow in specifying a particular shade for these coverings.
The origins of Cape Cod houses date back to the 1600s when the first Puritan settlers arrived in America. The humble architecture is similar to an English cottage, but a few features were adapted to withstand the harsh New England climate better. The steeply pitched roofs, for example, are designed to allow heavy snow to slide off more easily in the winter. Though Cape Cod cottages may, at times, come with the connotation of old money or coastal elite homeowners, they didn’t start like this. “The first settlers came from Plymouth and were just trying to survive,” McDonald explains.
Cape Cod houses also tend to have a prominent chimney structure, sometimes in the middle of the home or on the side. There are also certain colors, textures, and siding styles that can help capture the magic of a Cape Cod house design. Whether you live in a coastal area or far from the shoreline, the Cape Cod house style offers a sense of tranquility, simplicity, and timeless beauty. By integrating the design principles and key elements of Cape Cod houses into your own home, you can create a space that exudes the same charm and elegance. The decor and furnishings in a Cape Cod house should aim to create a comfortable, relaxed, and welcoming atmosphere that captures the essence of coastal living. Choose pieces and accents that reflect the timeless charm and simplicity of this architectural style, while also expressing your personal taste and style preferences.
We can say abstract tattoo is one of the major tattoo styles, very deep and with a lot of variations. Inside the abstract tattoo style, we do love the lines like nauralism branches, veins or even thunders, like this one. This time you can see another tattoo with different shapes and shadows but, instead of lines, with curves. This tattoo is made by Lexi, a wonderful abstract tattoo artist actually in Hong Kong. This tattoo, as you can see, is an entire back one, and the concept itself is beautiful.
Abstract Geometric Tattoo
When you are really a good tattoo artist, you can catch a simple concept and do something unique with that. This time, the tattoo is colorful, with bright orange tones, some yellow and very bright black ink, giving the composition a lot of strong eye-catching aura. Well, there you have it - the top abstract tattoos for men and women all in one place! With so many styles and options to choose from, you are spoilt for choice. All you need to do is to determine which of these designs are a good fit for you.
How do I choose a design for my minimalist tattoo?
Then, it is done in dotwork style, that is to say there are no lines on this tattoo, only dots. First, the circle itself is perfect, something very difficult because of the shape of the skin. As we told you before, inside abstract style are the surrealism ones too, and this is an example of this sub-style. The result is fantastic because it looks like real paint, and this is really hard to do. In this case, just two circles with two lines is more than enough to set up something unique and eye-catching. We are just going to show you a lot of different abstract tattoos (and, when we say a lot there are really a lot) with a brief explanation of each one.

As a largely hidden spot, the ribs are often saved for meaningful designs that hold meaning for you. For instance, blackwork tattoos and trash polka styles that are planned to fit the shape of your body or to fill the flat part of your side. Just be aware that this is a pretty painful spot – especially for large pieces. Representing longevity, resilience, and stability, trees are a great tattoo for grounded men who love the outdoors. Abstract tree tattoos come in various forms, including watercolor designs and illustrative styles that loosely mimic a tree shape. And, as abstract tattoos aren’t meant to be realistic, you can top your chosen piece off with whatever color leaves you like.
These tattoos have the potential to convey profound depth, often representing specific moments or significant scenes that hold special meaning. For instance, the emotional realism of a portrait capturing a loved one who has passed allows the wearer to hold onto their memory in a deeply felt way. Similarly, a realistic tattoo depicting a place, such as a hometown or favorite vacation spot, can evoke a wearer’s nostalgia and yearning for a specific point in time.
Here you can see a tattoo of a jellyfish in half realistic, half illustration style, only with black ink. We think the idea is fantastic, very original and it is fantastically inked by the tattoo artist, Jessi. This tattoo is made by Josh Williams, a tattoo artist based in London with fantastic designs. This tattoo is made by Typek, a tattoo artist based in Krakow, in Poland, and he has plenty of designs like this one on his Instagram account.
What Sets Realism Tattoos Apart: Unparalleled Detail and Lifelike Appearance
While some parts of your body might heal up like a champ, others can be a bit diva-like in their recovery process. The bony, high-maintenance areas like your elbows, knees, and feet tend to be the slowest healers. So, be patient, my friend, and give those temperamental spots some extra TLC. Well, if you’re taking a daily dose of ‘Ibuprofen with a Side of Wisdom,’ you should be okay.
Alternatively, abstract sun tattoos are also available in modern, geometric styles with fine black linework used to mimic rays of light. Abstract elephant tattoos represent strength, loyalty, and wisdom, and can be created in a variety of styles. Often highly decorative, their form may be partially or entirely constructed out of shapes and patterns to add interest to the design. Others are more realistic but slightly distorted or surrounded by obscure elements. Yes, abstract tattoos can be seamlessly combined with other tattoo styles, such as realism, watercolor, or blackwork, to create a unique and personalized tattoo design. Abstract tattoos are a form of body art that utilize abstract shapes, lines, and colors to create visually striking designs without specific representational subjects.
This is an example of how to get a head tattoo without sacrificing your edgy hairstyle. The feathered but sharp edges of the tattoo span from the temple to under the ears. The light and dark shading adds to the depth of the head tattoo and makes it more interesting and cool.

Limitless in its meaning, an abstract tattoo design can represent personal expression or philosophical expression. There are so many different variations, but the meaning always blends to create something beautiful and unique. Hard to define, but easy to intrigue someone’s mind, abstract tattoos are always worth seeing. They vary from geometric shape tattoos to nature-inspired watercolor pieces and edgy trash polkas. Each abstract art tattoo has an enigmatic shape, bold colors, and imaginative form, creating a captivating visual narrative that’ll speak volumes about your individuality and personality.

The blooming rose encircled by a wreath of leaves is linked to another blossoming rose under the ear with a cascading line of leaves. The soft shading of the blooming rose and the darker shading of the leaves add contrast to the tattoo.
This style has become fashionable in recent years and is a good alternative for those who want to cover a tattoo that they do not like very much. Its name indicates it so well, and the works of the abstract tattoo are born from the imagination, entirely or partially.
Dating back to Picasso’s era, continuous line drawings of simplified figures have progressed from sketch designs to quirky tattoos. Usually minimal with no shading, abstract face line tattoos capture the contours of the human face with a single, fluid outline. They may consist of one or several faces and can express a variety of emotions and meanings to suit you. It can be adapted to fit various areas of the body, depending on the design’s shape, size, and the desired aesthetic effect. The symbolism of abstract tattoos is subjective and open to interpretation.
Among such a wild area of styles, the Abstract Tattoo style stands out as a captivating piece of art that transcended the traditional boundaries of tattooing. With enigmatic designs, their fluid forms, geometric patterns and bold brushstrokes, they evoke a sense of mystery and intrigue. On the other hand, color realistic tattoos bring a whole new level to the party. There’s the added complexity of balancing color theory with lighting and shadows, creating a striking balance that brings vibrancy into the mix. Colorful realistic tattoo designs don’t just mimic the subject – they breathe life into it.

Again, large and nice by Disneyland-area hotel standards. The Hyatt House Anaheim has an outdoor pool, like virtually every other hotel in the area. The hotel also offers a complimentary grocery shopping service that can deliver groceries right to a guest’s room for in-room preparation. This puts it squarely in competition with the Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park Entrance, a hotel that we really liked. That hotel is about the same distance from Disneyland (albeit in the other direction). We’d give the edge to the Courtyard in quality, but the Hyatt is cheaper.

While it’s not as nice as the Courtyard, it’s also not as expensive. The cheaper price coupled with breakfast being included gives it the edge over both of those hotels. We think this hotel is going to hit the sweet spot for a lot of travelers, particularly families on a moderate budget who want to save money with the in-room fridge and microwave. All things considered, we think this is a top 5 Disneyland-area hotel and our pick for the top Hyatt in Anaheim. What type of room can I book at Hyatt House at Anaheim Resort/Convention Center?
In practice, we found almost all of the options on the spread to be pretty awful. For those keeping score at home, the Hyatt House and Hyatt Place (review on that coming soon) have joined the Hyatt Regency Orange County that has been around longer. With the four-diamond JW Marriott coming soon to Anaheim, you have to wonder whether Hyatt is eyeing the area for a Grand or Park branded hotel. By the time Star Wars Land opens, I think the area could probably sustain one of those luxury hotels. I found the sectional couch to be really nice for relaxing with my laptop. It’d likewise be a nice spot for families to sit and play board games or what have you.

Being a brand new hotel, it’s in great shape. The guest rooms feature a clean, contemporary style with ocean imagery. (This is Southern California, after all.) While it’s nothing lavish, the rooms are nice. Hyatt House at Anaheim Resort/Convention Center is a Disneyland Good Neighbor Hotel, meaning you can book it as a vacation package, but we never recommend doing that. Let’s start this Hyatt House Anaheim review with a look inside the rooms. We stayed in a standard king room, which featured incredibly comfortable bedding plus a large section couch. Cribs and extra beds aren't available at this property.
And if you get the urge to eat ice cream with your hands, we won’t judge… we’ll just suggest one of our all-new ice cream cookie sandwiches. We’ll build you one by hand, and stuff it full of whatever ice cream and toppings you scream for. Race down multiple waterslides, engage in jumbo versions of your favorite board games on stage for a chance to win fantastic prizes, or channel your inner detective in the thrilling murder mystery of Clue.

Activities are age appropriate and often have an ocean theme. They include arts and crafts, Zumbini motor skills activities, games, science activities (like building a volcano), video games and scavenger hunts. Kids can pay to create stuffed friends at the Build-a-Bear Workshop and get their Seuss on at the Suess-a-palooza parade and story time.
Carnival Sunrise

Carnival Sunrise current position
Find out which fun ingredients — staterooms, dining, activities — go into each deck. The Carnival Sunrise is a Sunshine-class cruise ship very similar to Carnival Sunshine. The ship’s shops include vendors selling fine jewelry, cosmetics, skincare, fragrances, luxury watches, spirits, accessories, apparel and more. Whatever your favorite item to shop for, you’re more than likely to find it in the Carnival Sunrise shops. If you want some good, clean fun, then visit during the daylight hours with the kiddos, for a family experience. If, though, you like to laugh to a raunchier brand of comedy, come after dark for some totally side-splitting acts.
If you're an adult seeking a melodious evening, unwind at Piano Bar 88™. Thrill-seekers, get ready for an adrenaline rush at Carnival WaterWorks™, the designated splash zone featuring exciting waterslides. Carnival Sunrise (formerly Carnival Triumph) is a Destiny-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. Rooms for all preferences include interior, balcony, ocean view, and suites. Cloud 9 Spa™ has everything you need to take your vacation to the next level. Massages, facials, body wraps, thermal suites – at Cloud 9 you’ve got it all.
Day 5: Fun Day at Sea
The course features two levels of challenge, and you can increase or decrease the toughness as you go. Ah, imagine a perfect day out on the links, the golfer's zen of the ball, the hole and nothing in between but well-manicured fairway... Whoever it was, they had one thing in mind — maximum fun for mini-golfers, big and small! That's precisely why you'll find a course on every Carnival ship, where you can hit the holes and take in everything you’d expect, like the sights and the sounds...
Or, how about a round of fun-for-all-ages open-air mini golf? The perfect way to spend a few hours while you’re cruising to the Caribbean, The Bahamas or any other exotic destination. Many cruisers participate -- but just as many are relaxing in the sun, crowding the pool or enjoying the water slides, ropes course and basketball course up on the top deck.

Carnival Sunrise does not have a nightclub, though either the atrium lobby or Limelight Lounge serve that purpose for after-show music and dancing. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. Often cruise lines offer special rates that cannot be displayed to the general public. By registering with Cruise.com you will be able to view these special rates and offers. Refurbishment/renovations received all public areas (facilities and venues) as well as all passenger staterooms. Sunrise ship's godmother is Kelly Arison - daughter of Micky Arison.
The two-room Camp Ocean facility has a play space for Penguins, with preschool toys like a play kitchen and toy car race track. The combined Stingrays and Sharks area is more of a multipurpose space, with plenty of video game stations. Underwater-theme decor and lots of light give the rooms a fun vibe.
Though it's next to the water slide entrance and the kids club, noise and rug rats don't really carry over. If all you want is to sit back and enjoy the ocean breeze, experience a completely different world at the Serenity Adult Only Retreat™. Enjoy a drink in the bar, flop onto a comfy chair with a book, or just relax in a hot tub and do nothing. The 2,984-passenger Carnival Sunrise is NOT a quiet ship. If you like group activities, you can bounce from trivia to bingo to crafts to a bean bag toss competition all in the course of a few hours.
In 2013, a fire caused the cruise ship to lose power during one of its sailings, leaving more than 4,000 people stranded on the ship until it could be towed to Mobile, Alabama. The ship was part of Carnival’s Destiny class, which also included ships Carnival Destiny and Carnival Victory. While the Destiny class is no more, all of the ships are still around. The tween and teen areas look like hip night clubs, with nooks for chatting and game play. Club O2 has foosball and a digital jukebox for playing music, singing karaoke and taking selfies. You'll find plenty of spots to sun yourself around the pool and on the deck right above.
The Cloud 9 Spa on Deck 11 lures cruisers with the promise of relaxation and rejuvenation. It offers massages (Swedish, hot stone, herbal poultice) from $159 to $235 and from $145 to $185 for facials (price ranges are subject to change). Carnival Sunrise has two smallish pools and a handful of hot tubs. On Caribbean and warm-weather cruises, the main pool area is packed all day long, and silly games, like the Hairy Chest Contest, take place there. It has a fun, energetic vibe -- but if you're looking for space to yourself, you won't find it here.
